MIDORI-KAI

We are a not-for-profit organization which operates 2 community homes (Midori-No-Ie Miyamachi and Midori-No-Ie Nakae in Sendai city) and 2 small regional activity centers (Midorikoubou Eiwadai and Midorikoubou Wakabayashi) which help people with mental disabilities achieve independence.

Midorikoubou Wakabayasi, located in Arahama (Wakabayashi-ku, Sendai), was completely destroyed by the 11th March tsunami. The 10m waves left only the substruction of the building. Even though there was no fatality amongst staff members and community residents, the tsunami caused serious damage in which furniture, equipments, products and documents were washed away and fields were completely wiped out.

It is our mission to rebuild our facilities for people in need. Your donation would allow us to continue our quest to help those with mentally disabilities and their family in the Sendai region.

2011.11.16 An opening ceremony of the MIDORI studio Wakabayashi

Our MIDORI studio Wakabayashi was all washed away by the flood.

Thanks to countless supports, we were able to open up our studio.

We held an opening ceremony of MIDORI studio Wakabayashi with gratitude at the Wakabayashi resident center on 16th November.

The director Mr. OZAKI and the head of the MIDORI studio ms. KONNO gave a warm and gratifying greeting.

At the end of the ceremony, we had a surprise wedding ceremony for users who were not able to have their wedding last year. The hall was filled with happiness.

We have resumed our activity now however we can not get back to normal because the fields we lost where we used to work outside. We will gradually continue on with our recovery.

2011.08.11 2 months past after reopening.

We lost the small activity center for the disabled by Tsunami on March 11th.

There used to be our institution but only the foundation is left now

We rent an institution in Wakabayashi-ku and started operation from June 7th. It’s difficult to work the same as before, but after 2 months past from reopening, we are gathering our composure.
However we lost the field where we were working every year. We have been looking for a place we can do farm work again, but it is quite difficult. The head, Ms. Konno has no time to rest by looking for a new work place even after reopening. Still, she said with a smile, “The staff’s smile is the best medicine for me”.
We are making and selling various goods at our studio.

The head, Ms. Konno and a staff member Ms. Shimoyama are very cheerful and spending time with members like their family.

2011.07.06 Reopen

We were led by the director Mr. Ozaki and made a decision at early stage for the people who were looking forward to restoration of studio and get started on rebuilding ‘Midori Studio Wakabayashi’ on 26th March.
We rent some space at “Taihaku-ku welfare association for the disabled” to restart operation from the middle of April.
Our two staffs worked energetically for searching for a place, signing a contract, arrangements for construction, applying for a subsidy and so on. Thanks to them, we were able to reopen ‘Midori Studio Wakabayashi’ at the new institution from 6th July. Regarding the rent, costs for carpentry work and equipment, we were able to cover a part of them by over 4 million yen of subsidy and donation from groups and individuals. Immediately after the earthquake disaster, it clearly brought out many problems surrounding disabled people who need support under the circumstances without lifeline, staffs who support them, discrimination and prejudice toward the mentally disabled as a result of ignorance, many victims who need mental care. As a goal, we would like to create a basis for consulting and support business for disabled people and their family, mainly operation of a care home to support the disabled who have mental and multiple handicap.
